UCSF Alliance Health Project
The Alliance Health Project (AHP) is a service of UCSF providing mental health services and expertise to help LGBTQ and HIV-affected communities. They offer a broad range of services including therapy, support groups, crisis intervention, psychiatric care, substance abuse services, and HIV counseling and testing.
Serve nearly 100 HIV-positive clients during weekly support groups as an HIV Support Group Facilitator. Paired with staff clinicians, you’ll also conduct a range of specialty support groups targeting specific topics such as gay and bisexual men in recovery, HIV and aging, and LGBTQ people living with cancer.
You may also assist staff conducting periodic workshops addressing HIV prevention issues and topics such as dating, relationships, sex, and body image.
We provide training for those interested in volunteering with our program, as well as California State Certification as an HIV Test Counselor, through our partnership with the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH).
Current TB test for the current year (Please have this done by the 2nd week of the training)
Flu vaccination for the current year’s flu season (Please have this done by the 2nd week of the training)
8 weeks of training:
1X per week from 5:30-7:30, AND
1X per week of shadowing an experienced Counselor for 2 hrs (in addition to class)
You will be required by SFDPH to bring proof of shadowing sessions
1 Online test provided by SFDPH that must be passed with 80% accuracy
5 day, 9am – 4pm, (Quarterly dates), training provided by SFDPH for HIV Counselor Certification
After Certification, 6 hours per week commitment (which can be completed in various shifts)
1 Yr commitment of counseling (Should average out to 100 tests per year; 2Xs per week)
Quarterly In-Services (HIV Counseling related topics)
2 Major events (i.e., Dore Alley, Folsom Street Fair, etc.)
1 Art for AIDS day/evening shift
